A list of several useful science and chemistry orientated websites organised into different groups

For anyone looking for information about anything, the internet is the first port of call these days. Search engines have made this search quick and easy, but how do you decide which link to click on first? This article will give a list of websites that are out there and how useful they are.

Basic Chemistry

So you need to know something foundational about chemistry, where do you go?

There are several interactive Periodic Tables on the internet, the most comprehensive is probably Web Elements. An alternative can be found at ChemiCool which also contains a chemistry dictionary and a few other chemistry tools. There are videos of chemistry experiment to be found at the Creative Chemistry on the Internet site.

School Chemistry

For young people studying chemistry at school there are a number of good clear curriculum based websites. For the UK Chemguide would take some beating with its clear explanations of all the stuff you need to know at both GCSE and A-level. For the US there is a very well written site by the ChemTeam which contains all you need to know and further links as well. There is also a very useful virtual chemistry textbook at CHEMystery.

Chemistry News

For up-to-date advances in the world of chemistry the first points of call would be the American Chemical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry in the UK. Another useful site in this regard on more general science is Science Daily.

Fun Sites

Chemistry can also be fun and this is demonstrated on the web in various sites. For a satirical point of view on general science mixed with some great spoof articles Null Hypothesis is a must visit. There are some great science cartoons at Nearing Zero.

How Stuff Works

I will round off this survey of chemistry websites with a much more general site. How Stuff Works is an amazing resource in which the way things work are clearly explained with good diagrams and pictures. I am sure many hours could be spent exploring this site and learning lots of useful information.

Of course the ever increasing content on the chemistry topic of Suite101 is becoming a more and more useful site all the time!

If you find any other useful websites related to the amazing science of chemistry, please start a discussion in which you should give the address of the site and a short description. Thanks!
